The Edirne Selimiye Mosque is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements of Ottoman architecture and is considered to be the masterpiece of the celebrated architect Mimar Sinan. The mosque was built during the 16th century under the patronage of Sultan Selim II, son of Sultan Suleyman the magnificent.

The mosque’s construction took nearly a decade to complete, and the final result is truly breathtaking. The mosque is built on a hill, and its four minarets are visible from miles around. The interior of the mosque is equally impressive, with intricate tilework, marble pillars, and stained-glass windows.

One of the most striking features of the Edirne Selimiye Mosque is its immense dome, which measures 31 meters in diameter and sits atop a drum that is 43 meters in diameter. The dome is supported by four huge arches and is decorated with calligraphy and geometric patterns. It is said that when the mosque was completed, Mimar Sinan was so pleased with the dome that he exclaimed, “My masterpiece has been completed!”
